Indonesia Bans Backyard Poultry Farms

Boston (eCanadaNow) - The Indonesian government banned poultry farms in residential areas of the capital Jakarta and two other provinces to fight the bird flu.  This comes as a response when a sudden outbreak of the bird flu took place last week killing four people.

Jakarta bird flu hospital overwhelmed with patients

JAKARTA, Jan 15 (Reuters) - One of two hospitals designated to treat bird flu cases in the Indonesian capital has been overwhelmed with patients with symptoms of the disease, a doctor said on Monday. In response to a new surge in cases, two Indonesian ministers said the government was pressing for a ban on backyard fowl in three provincial areas worst hit by the H5N1 bird flu virus.

Do migratory birds spread bird flu viruses?  It seems to be the case.  Wild waterfowl are considered the natural reservoir of all influenza A viruses. They have probably carried influenza viruses, with no apparent harm, for centuries. They are known to carry viruses of the H5 and H7 subtypes, but usually in a mild form. Considerable circumstantial evidence suggests that migratory birds can introduce mild  H5 and H7 viruses to poultry flocks, which then mutate to the highly virulent form.

The best way to prevent a pandemic would be to eliminate the virus from birds, but it has become increasingly difficult.
