Everyone seems worried about bird flu. Is there reason for the concern? Why are governments doing about it? What exactly is bird flu? Does bird flu carry a risk to human health ? Here are some facts about bird flu. Avian influenza, or “bird flu”, is a highly contagious disease caused by viruses that normally only infect birds and, sometimes, pigs. Avian influenza viruses have, on rare occasions, crossed the species barrier to infect humans. That is the current concern.
In domestic poultry, infection with avian influenza viruses causes two main forms of disease. The so-called low pathogenic (less dangerous) form commonly causes only mild symptoms (ruffled feathers, a drop in egg production) and may not be noticed. The more dangerous form is much more serious. It spreads very rapidly through poultry flocks, causes disease affecting multiple internal organs, and has a death rate that can approach 100%, often within 48 hours.Which viruses are the cause this serious disease? Influenza A viruses1 have 16 H subtypes and 9 N subtypes2. Only viruses of the H5 and H7 subtypes are known to cause the highly pathogenic form of the disease. However, not all viruses of the H5 and H7 subtypes are that dangerous and not all will cause severe disease in poultry. What is understood as of today is that H5 and H7 viruses are introduced to poultry flocks in their low pathogenic form. The problem is that when allowed to circulate among many bird populations, the viruses can mutate, quickly, into the highly dangerous form. This is why the presence of an H5 or H7 virus in poultry is always cause for concern, even when the initial signs of infection are mild. Because there have been many outbreaks, and deaths in various parts of the world, government health agencies, remain on the alert. |

The Bird Flu Manual
If you had to rely upon only one source of information to help you and your family survive a severe bird flu pandemic, the Bird Flu Manual would be your best bet, hands down! In a severe pandemic, you will be required to cope with the gravest medical and social consequences with virtually no outside help. Having a proper appreciation of the risks and taking prudent steps to deal with them ahead of time, are ways to cope successfully with this crisis. Most people who will die from influenza do so from pneumonia or dehydration. Dehydration can be readily detected and treated at home and explaining how to do that is one of the major focuses of the Bird Flu Manual. Preventing or treating dehydration in people with pandemic flu will save more lives than all other treatments combined. The home treatment advice provided by Dr. Woodson is based upon 25 years of Internal Medicine practice and experience treating hundreds of flu patients. From this foundation, he has concentrated the essence of lifesaving care of mild to severely ill flu patients at home in the Bird Flu Manual. That the pandemic is coming is certain. What we don?t know is when and how bad it will be. Dr. Woodson provides the reader of the Bird Flu Manual with a survey of the medical and scientific literature dealing with influenza pandemics and Bird Flu in particular.Author: Grattan Woodson

Bird Flu: Everything You Need to Know About the Next Pandemic
"Marc Siegel is an articulate voice of reason in a world beset by hype and hysteria. We would be well advised to listen closely to what he has to say."-Jerome Groopman, M.D., staff writer, the New Yorker
"Siegel cuts through the hype about the 'deadly' this and the 'lethal' that, and applies reason in seeking the answers."
-John M. Barry, author of The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History
"Timely and needed. At such times, we need soothsayers and explicators to redirect the ready-fire-aim mindset. Siegel's book fulfills this role well."
-The Journal of the American Medical Association
As bird flu sweeps through Asia, the rest of the world has begun to worry that it might spread west and start infecting humans. As many experts have pointed out, an influenza pandemic is only a matter of time and that time could be now. Or is it? In Bird Flu, Dr. Marc Siegel cuts through the hype, the facts, the fears, and the realities to explain what has the experts so worried and why there's still plenty of reason to be calm. Among the questions he answers are:
* What is bird flu, and who has it?
* What can I do to protect my family?
* Should I stockpile Tamiflu?
* Will this be like the deadly Spanish flu of 1918?
* Why is there no bird flu vaccine?
* Will the annual flu shot protect me?
In his sensible and entertaining style, Siegel looks at the advances we've made in treatments, the research still to be done, and the challenges ahead for Asia to lay out a realistic plan for ending this global threat. While a bird flu outbreak in the United States may or may not happen this year, there's still a great deal of work to be done in readying America for outbreaks of any kind.

Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or ?epidemics? of influenza. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza viruses that are already in existence among people, whereas pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or by subtypes that have never circulated among people or that have not circulated among people for a long time. Past influenza pandemics have led to high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss.
