Jakarta bird flu hospital overwhelmed with patients JAKARTA, Jan 15 (Reuters) - One of two hospitals designated to treat bird flu cases in the Indonesian capital has been overwhelmed with patients with symptoms of the disease, a doctor said on Monday. In response to a new surge in cases, two Indonesian ministers said the government was pressing for a ban on backyard fowl in three provincial areas worst hit by the H5N1 bird flu virus. Four Indonesians have died this year after a six-week lull in cases, taking the number of human deaths from bird flu in the country to 61, the highest of any country. Nine people with bird flu symptoms, including a 5-year-old girls in intensive care, were being treated at Jakarta's Persahabatan hospital and its isolation rooms could accept no more patients, the head of the hospital's bird flu ward said. Agricultural authorities began culling thousands of chickens at a southern Japanese poultry farm Sunday after test results found a pathogenic strain of the bird flu virus, officials said amid the nation's latest outbreak of the disease. Some 4,000 chickens have died at a farm in the town of Kiyotake in Japan's southern prefecture (state) of Miyazaki since last week, and local officials said late Saturday that the virus belonged to the broad H5 family. .
Bird flu spreading in northern Nigeria Adiya Farm, Nigeria - The detection of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza in Sokoto means the disease is or has been present in 17 of Nigeria's 36 states and in the Federal Capital Territory. The officials sprayed chemicals to kill more than 21,000 chickens at Adiya farm, about 10 miles from the state capital, while labourers wearing no protective equipment dug a pit to bury the birds. The first African country to be hit by bird flu, Nigeria has not reported any human cases of the disease although experts warn surveillance may not be completely effective and cases may have gone undetected. "There was a lot of movement of people and poultry over the Christmas, New Year and Eid celebrations and that is what has caused this new outbreak," said Junaidu Maina, head of Nigeria's livestock department.
Authorities on avian flu alert as migratory birds arrive Dubai: With the start of the migratory bird season, the authorities have become vigilant to monitor the situation to prevent bird flu related cases from entering the country. A fresh wave of bird flu related cases in Asia has once again forced the authorities concerned to be on their toes. In the latest case, the avian virus infected a farmer in China and killed an Indonesian teenager. According to the World Health Organisation statistics, H5N1 strain of bird flu virus has infected 263 people in 10 countries since 2003 killing 157. "We did not relax at all despite the fact that there has been no reported bird flu case in the UAE," said Dr Hesham Ahmad Fahmi, Head of the Veterinary Section at the Dubai Municipality. He said the special committee of the municipality, which works in coordination with the UAE's National Emergency Committee on Bird Flu, monitors the situation regularly. |

The Bird Flu Manual
If you had to rely upon only one source of information to help you and your family survive a severe bird flu pandemic, the Bird Flu Manual would be your best bet, hands down! In a severe pandemic, you will be required to cope with the gravest medical and social consequences with virtually no outside help. Having a proper appreciation of the risks and taking prudent steps to deal with them ahead of time, are ways to cope successfully with this crisis. Most people who will die from influenza do so from pneumonia or dehydration. Dehydration can be readily detected and treated at home and explaining how to do that is one of the major focuses of the Bird Flu Manual. Preventing or treating dehydration in people with pandemic flu will save more lives than all other treatments combined. The home treatment advice provided by Dr. Woodson is based upon 25 years of Internal Medicine practice and experience treating hundreds of flu patients. From this foundation, he has concentrated the essence of lifesaving care of mild to severely ill flu patients at home in the Bird Flu Manual. That the pandemic is coming is certain. What we don?t know is when and how bad it will be. Dr. Woodson provides the reader of the Bird Flu Manual with a survey of the medical and scientific literature dealing with influenza pandemics and Bird Flu in particular.Author: Grattan Woodson

Bird Flu: Everything You Need to Know About the Next Pandemic
"Marc Siegel is an articulate voice of reason in a world beset by hype and hysteria. We would be well advised to listen closely to what he has to say."-Jerome Groopman, M.D., staff writer, the New Yorker
"Siegel cuts through the hype about the 'deadly' this and the 'lethal' that, and applies reason in seeking the answers."
-John M. Barry, author of The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History
"Timely and needed. At such times, we need soothsayers and explicators to redirect the ready-fire-aim mindset. Siegel's book fulfills this role well."
-The Journal of the American Medical Association
As bird flu sweeps through Asia, the rest of the world has begun to worry that it might spread west and start infecting humans. As many experts have pointed out, an influenza pandemic is only a matter of time and that time could be now. Or is it? In Bird Flu, Dr. Marc Siegel cuts through the hype, the facts, the fears, and the realities to explain what has the experts so worried and why there's still plenty of reason to be calm. Among the questions he answers are:
* What is bird flu, and who has it?
* What can I do to protect my family?
* Should I stockpile Tamiflu?
* Will this be like the deadly Spanish flu of 1918?
* Why is there no bird flu vaccine?
* Will the annual flu shot protect me?
In his sensible and entertaining style, Siegel looks at the advances we've made in treatments, the research still to be done, and the challenges ahead for Asia to lay out a realistic plan for ending this global threat. While a bird flu outbreak in the United States may or may not happen this year, there's still a great deal of work to be done in readying America for outbreaks of any kind.

Beating the Flu: The Natural Prescription for Surviving Pandemic Influenza and Bird Flu
Experts agree that the world is due for a flu pandemic, and the Bird Flu virus?with a 70% kill rate?may cause just such a catastrophe. Even conservative estimates say such a scenario could kill 2 million Americans and shut down economic services as the virus rages across the globe. As the world community busily prepares for the potential nightmare, it?s essential that individuals arm themselves with up-to-date information. In Beating the Flu, Dr. J. E. Williams apprises the situation honestly and offers vital advice for avoiding Bird Flu as well as steps for safely overcoming the virus should you contract it. Dr. Williams argues that due to a severe shortage in antiviral pharmaceutical drugs, natural medicines will play a crucial role in minimizing the outbreak and ensuring good health for you and your family. Dr. J. E. Williams has practiced Oriental Medicine for more than two decades and is the author of three books. Presently, he is the Academic Dean at the East West College of Natural Medicine.Author: J. E. Williams

In the last few years, the avian flu, or bird flu, has become a growing worry around the world. Although avian influenza once infected only birds, the new avian flu virus that has emerged from Asia can be passed on from birds to humans with deadly results. The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are closely monitoring what could be the next deadly flu pandemic, especially the possibility of the virus mutating into a strand that could be transmitted from human to human. "Avian Flu" examines the history and science of this disease, as well as how it affects the body. This book also discusses the symptoms and treatment, bringing forward vital information on this timely topic.
A fire is smoldering in Southeast Asia. A fire, metaphorically speaking, that will soon sweep across our oceans and all corners of our continents, leaving little but death and destruction behind. The worst-case estimates are staggering and unfathomable: 100 million to 360 million souls lost; 1.9 million in America alone. And perhaps most disturbing, and sickening, of all: There's an inexpensive, easily accesible cure that could stop this pandemic dead in its tracks, were it not for the government and Big Pharma greed supressing the truth about this super nutrient's value. Here, in this alarming investigation, you'll find the truth. The facts. Knowledge shared from Nobel Prize-winning chemists and other top scientific minds. Knowledge which, ultimately, may mean the difference between living and succumbing to the worst influenza outbreak we've seen in nearly a hundred years.
We have been repeatedly warned by leading medical professionals and government health officials that a severe influenza pandemic is a very real possibility, with potential global death tolls exceeding 100 million. We are told that a pandemic will likely last 12-18 months in multiple waves, and to expect widespread social disruption. We are told that we need to stockpile non-perishable food and water, as our food supply chain and utilities may become severely degraded or completely inoperative. Yet there is little information available from them on how families can prepare for such a long term traumatic event.
