How to Prepare for a Pandemic: and Other Extended Disasters
How to Prepare for a Pandemic: and Other Extended Disasters We have been repeatedly warned by leading medical professionals and government health officials that a severe influenza pandemic is a very real possibility, with potential global death tolls exceeding 100 million. We are told that a pandemic will likely last 12-18 months in multiple waves, and to expect widespread social disruption. We are told that we need to stockpile non-perishable food and water, as our food supply chain and utilities may become severely degraded or completely inoperative. Yet there is little information available from them on how families can prepare for such a long term traumatic event.

This book lays out in detail the planning, preparation, and actions to take to avoid an inevitable mass scramble for suppliers' small and increasingly backlogged inventories of storable food, water storage and purification equipment, emergency lighting and communications, alternative transportation, and a host of other important necessities. The book provides planning guidelines and practical how-to for the;
  • type, quantity, and source of non-perishable food
  • techniques for collecting, storing, and purifying water
  • approaches for reliable lighting and staying informed in the event of a electrical grid collapse
  • formulas for sizing a solar PV system for backup (or everyday) power
  • ways to keep your house warm in the winter
  • measures to protect your family from public unrest
  • procedures to treat sick family members when hospitals are overwhelmed
  • approaches to simple cleaning and sanitation
  • and a host of other preparations needed for families to stay healthy and safe during a serious influenza pandemic.

    Reviews

?The book is crammed with lots of very valuable information on preparing for this emergency with the focus on the needs of the family. I found it very informative and helpful for making and improving the quality of my family?s plan. This is a unique and very timely contribution to the preparedness literature that is long overdue. It is a must read and reference text for anyone who is serious about preparing their home and family for the possibility of a severe influenza pandemic.?
-- Dr. Grattan Woodson, MD, author The Bird Flu Preparedness Planner, The Bird Flu Manual

?An intensively researched, user-friendly, and imminently practical crash course in surviving on limited resources. Whether coming as a pandemic, hurricane, or ice storm, disaster-induced disruption of societal support systems is increasingly inevitable, and this guide is a must-have to help you and your loved ones plan to survive.?
-- Thomas Honey, owner of Honey Electric Solar Inc.

?William Stewart?s How to Prepare for a Pandemic covers the breadth of disaster planning and is an important, comprehensive contribution to the literature of pandemic preparation.?

New York Times Deadly Invaders: Virus Outbreaks Around the World, from Marburn Fever to Avian Flu
New York Times Deadly Invaders: Virus Outbreaks Around the World, from Marburn Fever to Avian Flu
An epidemic strikes the United States, plunging the country into chaos. New York Times medical reporter Denise Grady uses this terrifying scenario, taken from the pages of a U.S. government report on the potential outcome of a pandemic, as the starting point for a journey into the gripping world of emerging diseases.

In search of a better understanding of these often deadly diseases, Grady heads to Angola, the site of the 2005 Marburg virus epidemic, a disease closely related to Ebola. On the ground, and sometimes frighteningly close to victims of the disease, Denise explores the realities of health care in the developing world, and its potential effects on our own welfare.

With supplemental sidebars that explain key scientific and social issues and in-depth chapters on the origins and spread of Marburg, avian flu, HIV, SARS, West Nile virus, hantavirus, and monkeypox, this is a fascinating look at the health dangers we face in a global society.

Dread: How Fear and Fantasy have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to the Avian Flu
Dread: How Fear and Fantasy have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to the Avian Flu
The average individual is far more likely to die in a car accident than from a communicable disease?yet we are still much more fearful of the epidemic. Even at our most level-headed, the thought of an epidemic can inspire terror. As Philip Alcabes persuasively argues in Dread, our anxieties about epidemics are created not so much by the germ or microbe in question?or the actual risks of contagion?but by the unknown, the undesirable, and the misunderstood.

Alcabes examines epidemics through history to show how they reflect the particular social and cultural anxieties of their times. From Typhoid Mary to bioterrorism, as new outbreaks are unleashed or imagined, new fears surface, new enemies are born, and new behaviors emerge. Dread dissects the fascinating story of the imagined epidemic: the one that we think is happening, or might happen; the one that disguises moral judgments and political agendas, the one that ultimately expresses our deepest fears.

The Natural Bird Flu Cure "They" Don't Want You to Know About
The Natural Bird Flu Cure A fire is smoldering in Southeast Asia. A fire, metaphorically speaking, that will soon sweep across our oceans and all corners of our continents, leaving little but death and destruction behind. The worst-case estimates are staggering and unfathomable: 100 million to 360 million souls lost; 1.9 million in America alone. And perhaps most disturbing, and sickening, of all: There's an inexpensive, easily accesible cure that could stop this pandemic dead in its tracks, were it not for the government and Big Pharma greed supressing the truth about this super nutrient's value. Here, in this alarming investigation, you'll find the truth. The facts. Knowledge shared from Nobel Prize-winning chemists and other top scientific minds. Knowledge which, ultimately, may mean the difference between living and succumbing to the worst influenza outbreak we've seen in nearly a hundred years.

Indonesia Bans Backyard Poultry Farms

Boston (eCanadaNow) - The Indonesian government banned poultry farms in residential areas of the capital Jakarta and two other provinces to fight the bird flu.  This comes as a response when a sudden outbreak of the bird flu took place last week killing four people.

The ban is for the capital province Jakarta as well as West Java and Banten which are very highly populated areas where these people lived closely to the sick birds.

The Jakarta government asked the Jakarta City Council as well as the provincial parliaments of West Java and Banten to endorse the ban through local legislation.

Last week four Indonesians died of the bird flu after the country has five weeks without a death.

Many urban areas have backyard chicken farms in neighborhoods which could easily spread the bird flu virus among the poulty and humans.

Beating the Flu: The Natural Prescription for Surviving Pandemic Influenza and Bird Flu
Beating the Flu: The Natural Prescription for Surviving Pandemic Influenza and Bird Flu Experts agree that the world is due for a flu pandemic, and the Bird Flu virus?with a 70% kill rate?may cause just such a catastrophe. Even conservative estimates say such a scenario could kill 2 million Americans and shut down economic services as the virus rages across the globe. As the world community busily prepares for the potential nightmare, it?s essential that individuals arm themselves with up-to-date information. In Beating the Flu, Dr. J. E. Williams apprises the situation honestly and offers vital advice for avoiding Bird Flu as well as steps for safely overcoming the virus should you contract it. Dr. Williams argues that due to a severe shortage in antiviral pharmaceutical drugs, natural medicines will play a crucial role in minimizing the outbreak and ensuring good health for you and your family. Dr. J. E. Williams has practiced Oriental Medicine for more than two decades and is the author of three books. Presently, he is the Academic Dean at the East West College of Natural Medicine.

Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching
Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching From age-old scourges such as smallpox and tuberculosis to emerging threats like AIDS and SARS, our interactions with animals have always played a pivotal role as a source of human disease. Bird flu is the latest such menace coming home to roost. Leading public health authorities now predict as inevitable a pandemic of influenza, triggered by bird flu and expected to lead to millions of deaths around the globe.

The influenza virus has existed for millions of years as an innocuous intestinal virus of wild ducks. What turned a harmless waterborne duck virus into a killer? In Bird Flu, Dr. Michael Greger traces the human role in the evolution of this virus, whose humble beginnings belie its transformation into a killer mutant strain with the potential to become as ferocious as Ebola and as contagious as the common cold. In the face of the coming pandemic, Dr. Greger reveals what we can do to protect our families and what human society to can do to reduce the likelihood of such catastrophes in the future.

Amid the growing panic surrounding this issue, Dr. Greger takes a sobering look at a deadly cycle and offers a solution to ending it.

The Great Bird Flu Hoax: The Truth They Don't Want You to Know About the "Next Big Pandemic"
The Great Bird Flu Hoax: The Truth They Don't Want You to Know About the

The U.S. government is now practically screaming that a new avian super-flu will likely kill millions of Americans. The mainstream media is entirely onboard, as are drug companies and other corporations poised to benefit immensely off the paranoia. But there is NO coming bird flu pandemic. It's an elaborate scheme contrived by the government and big business for reasons that boil down to power and money.

Presenting eye-opening evidence that casts serious doubt on the truthfulness of reports about the virus's ability to transmit, and its mortality rates around the world, renowned physician Dr. Joseph Mercola reveals the secrets about the great bird flu hoax. In compelling fashion he provides you the real facts you need to know to protect you from a far greater ill - corporate and governmental greed.

Bird Flu What to Do: Prepare to Survive
Bird Flu What to Do: Prepare to Survive BIRD FLU WHAT TO DO: PREPARE TO SURVIVE is a concise, yet comprehensive book that outlines disaster preparation - with a particular focus on what to do if there is an influenza pandemic - for ordinary citizens, covering food/water storage, special needs of those unable to care for themselves, neighborhood and community organization, home health care under dire circumstance, quarantine preparation, and safety/security issues at home. The book both consolidates resources available to the public and goes beyond what is accessible to the ordinary citizen with contributions from experts in diverse fields, and an extended appendix covering what to get, where to get it and additional information that could prove lifesaving.

The book is not fear based, but attempts to normalize disaster preparation, posing it as one the most socially responsible thing we can "just do." This book fills the gap between what public health can do and what we ordinary citizens need to do. Communities, neighborhoods, and families that have made the effort to prepare to survive natural disasters will be more resilient if and when a natural disaster occurs.
